Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp weighs in on the intriguing Nunez vs. Haaland Golden Boot race

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that summer signing Darwin Nunez isn’t motivated by a competition with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland for the Premier League Golden Boot this season, but rather by helping his team win games.

Nunez may turn his attention to a personal crusade to outscore the Norwegian striker if he is still in contention at the end of the season, according to the German.

“I don’t know Darwin well enough yet but at the moment he is just concerned that he can score for us and set up goals for us or whatever,” Klopp said.

“I think at the moment he isn’t bothered about comparisons or rivalries, not at all. But if there was a situation towards the end of the season about goalscoring or whatever then there could be, yes.

“I don’t think Mo Salah would look at that either yet. It was always clear that Haaland at City would work out. It’s a chance-producing side and he is a finisher so it was always clear and that is why it is not a surprise or whatever.”

Nunez signed a six-year contract with Liverpool this summer after the Reds spent an initial £64 million to lure him away from Benfica.

And the striker scored on his Premier League debut for Liverpool, coming off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Fulham last weekend.

Meanwhile, Haaland joined the Citizens from Borussia Dortmund and made his debut against West Ham last Sunday, scoring from the penalty spot and later adding a second in a 2-0 victory.

Both players have already shown their goal-scoring abilities for their previous clubs and could have productive seasons in England this time around.

When asked if he had set a goal target for Nunez this season, Klopp replied, “No I didn’t – of course no.”

Klopp will be desperate for his team to win their first game of the season against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

And he believes his team can have another successful season if they focus on their own performances.

“We just try to make sure that our football – the football idea we have – that it is obvious again and consistently all the time,” the 55-year-old added.

“Because if we can do that it is still very uncomfortable to play against us and that is really my first concern.

“I hope that happens again because from there we can then start thinking about twists and tweaks and how we can do this and how we can improve areas. But now the first thing for us is that we bring in the intensity and we will be fine.”
