Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp comes out clear on Mohamed Salah and Lionel Messi comparisons

Jurgen Klopp has rejected comparisons between Mohamed Salah and Lionel Messi – and explained how Liverpool’s players knew they’d witnessed another special moment from the Egyptian.

Salah scored his latest goal-of-the-season contender with an incredible individual effort in Liverpool’s 5-0 Premier League win over Watford on Saturday.

The forward’s outstanding overall performance has prompted renewed speculation that he has surpassed Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski as the best player in the world.

When asked if Salah’s performances reminded him of Messi, Klopp replied, “He looks like Mo actually!”

“He is in good shape. The three goals from Bobby were really nice and it was a 100th Premier League goal for Sadio.

“All these stories are really nice but we cannot overlook the performance of Mo.

“It was an outstanding performance, to be honest. That’s really good and very important for us.

“The goal was very special, but if you go back a little bit you might find a goal at home against Watford which looks a little similar to this one.

“He is obviously the kind of player who can do these kind of things. So good for us!”

Klopp also avoided being asked to choose between Salah’s goal and his wonder-goal against Manchester City earlier this month.

He did, however, describe how the reaction of the player’s teammates highlighted another memorable moment.

“Why should I compare two world-class goals?” he said. “I like them both and I don’t want to miss them, to be honest!

“They are obviously different ones. The other one was slightly more dynamic, a bigger space than here.

“None of these goals are possible for people with normal feet, which is all the rest of us! But it’s obviously possible for him, and that’s what makes it special.

“You could see how the team celebrated the goal that everybody realised immediately it was something special.”

Klopp added: “He is a top-class professional and likes training, the physical and technical part of it. He is doing these kind of things in training as well.

“Our little problem is we don’t have too much time for training and we usually just recover when we don’t play. That means we don’t see it that often in training as we don’t have time.”
