Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard linked with shock new appointment just days after getting fired by Aston Villa

According to the Birmingham Mail, Liverpool great Steven Gerrard has been connected to Wigan Athletic’s management position in the EFL Championship.

Gerrard was fired by Aston Villa on 20 October after the Villans’ terrible run of form placed them barely outside of the Premier League’s bottom three.

Villa’s dismal 3-0 loss to Fulham at Craven Cottage ultimately led to the end of the former Liverpool midfielder’s tenure as manager.

The former England captain expressed regret upon his dismissal, stating (via the Guardian):

“Aston Villa is a club with a special history, I really wanted to bring back those memorable achievements, unfortunately it wasn’t to be. I wish everyone at the club all the very best for the future.”

In 40 games at Villa Park, Gerrard supervised 13 victories, eight draws, and 19 losses.

However, the former Rangers manager is being touted as a surprise candidate to succeed Leam Richardson as Wigan’s manager.

The Latics fired Richardson on November 10 after losing eight consecutive games. They are ranked 22nd in the Championship with only six victories in 21 games.

Steven Gerrard has entered the betting market with odds of 16/1 to become the next manager of Wigan. Wigan could be intrigued by the famous midfielder’s efforts as Rangers manager.

The Liverpool legend guided the Ibrox club to its first Scottish Premier League championship in ten years.
