Liverpool legend explains club stance on Youri Tielemans transfer as Arsenal stalls

Steve McManaman has dismissed suggestions that Liverpool could make a late move for Leicester City contract rebel Youri Tielemans, claiming that “the Reds would have taken him by now” if “the Reds wanted him.”

The Belgian midfielder has been the subject of intense speculation all summer, but he is still a Foxes player, with Arsenal stalling on a deal.

The 25-year-old midfielder was expected to leave the King Power Stadium this summer after showing no signs of extending his contract, which is set to expire next June.

Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunners for his services, but the Gunners have chosen to concentrate their efforts on other targets during the current transfer window.

With Tielemans set to leave Leicester on a free transfer next summer, there will undoubtedly be pressure on the East Midlands club to offload one of their prized assets.

Following Arsenal’s failure to make a move for the midfielder, there is speculation that Liverpool may now act on their reported interest in order to address their current midfield injury crisis.

Thiago Alcantara suffered a hamstring strain in Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Fulham, joining Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones on the sidelines.

Despite the Reds’ obvious need for reinforcements in the middle of the park, McManaman believes Tielemans will not be moved by his former club.

The former Liverpool midfielder believes that if the Reds wanted the Belgian playmaker, they would have signed him by now.

“Would Youri Tielemans be a viable option for Liverpool? I don’t know,” McManaman wrote in his latest column for Horseracing.net. “The only thing is, if you had wanted him, you would have got him now.

“Can they get him for free in twelve months time? I have no idea but for £20million-£25m he’d be available now if that was the case. I presume if Liverpool had wanted him they would have taken him.”

Leicester are thought to have been holding out for a fee of up to £30 million for the midfielder this summer, but as the transfer deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether the Foxes will be willing to lower that valuation.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have had a relatively quiet transfer window in terms of incomings, failing to sign a potential replacement for Tielemans ahead of his expected departure.

Tielemans hinted in June that he is ready to take on a new challenge this summer.

When asked if he could leave Leicester during the current transfer window, the Leicester creator said, “That is not out of the question.”

“I feel very good at Leicester, I was welcomed with open arms from day one. I give everything for the club until the last day. But of course you have to listen to other opportunities, you have to look at your career, and sometimes you have to make choices. Maybe one will come my way.”
