Liverpool Legend Could Match Rare Record This Weekend That Nobody Thought Could Ever Be Equaled
Bayer Leverkusen have the opportunity to match an impressive milestone this weekend.
In October 2022, Leverkusen appointed former Liverpool and Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso as head coach, taking over from Gerardo Seoane when the team was second to last in the standings after eight games.
Since Alonso’s arrival, the team’s performance has dramatically improved.
This season, under Alonso’s guidance, Leverkusen have secured the Bundesliga title and have yet to lose a match.
As they enter the latest weekend of games, Leverkusen have the chance to match a record currently held by Portuguese team Benfica.
Benfica set an unbeaten streak of 48 matches from 1963 to 1965, the longest since the inception of UEFA club competitions in 1955/1956.
Leverkusen have gone 47 games without a loss and could match Benfica’s record when they play Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend.
Following that, Alonso’s squad has the opportunity to surpass the record when they face Roma in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final.
Thanks to his exceptional work with Leverkusen, Alonso has drawn interest from his former clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich, both seeking new managers for the summer.
Nevertheless, Alonso announced last month that he will remain with Leverkusen.
He stated: “I had a constructive discussion with Bayer Leverkusen and informed them of my decision to stay and continue with the club.
“After contemplating my future during the break, I chose to make Leverkusen my home. This is the right place for me.”
Alonso further explained: There were numerous reasons for choosing the club. After a year, we’ve been building a cohesive team and fostering great camaraderie.
“There were many contributing factors and numerous players. This season has been exceptional so far, and we aim to maintain our momentum.”
