Liverpool handed a possible bargaining chip for Bellingham signing as Dortmund now want Reds star
Liverpool may have been given an advantage in the race to sign Jude Bellingham after Borussia Dortmund expressed interest in Naby Keita.
According to a report from German publication Bild (via TEAMtalk), the Bundesliga club is eager to sign the Guinean free agent, whose contract expires in 2023.
It gives Julian Ward and co. with a small window of opportunity to capitalise on the rumoured interest in the No. 8 before his departure from Anfield is virtually assured.
Keita is now scheduled to leave Liverpool on a free transfer next summer. With his contract expiring and a new deal yet to be negotiated, any interested club will have the opportunity to acquire him at a discount.
Now, according to BILD, Dortmund has Keita as a top priority and will closely monitor his contract status with Liverpool.
However, according to a separate source from Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund will only pursue Keita if Jude Bellingham leaves the club.
Even if Bellingham were to remain, it would be prudent to get a player of Keita’s calibre on a free transfer.
Despite displaying hints of inconsistency at Liverpool, Keita was outstanding in Germany. Keita may be interested in returning to the country where he played his greatest football if he wishes to continue to develop.
However, with Liverpool, he will almost certainly be vying for every available title, whereas with Dortmund, this may not be the case.
