Liverpool fans may be shocked at the club Gerrard is ‘in talks’ to take charge of
Karar (via The Mirror) to become the new manager of Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Despite being linked to other jobs since being sacked from Aston Villa in October, it seems likely that Gerrard will move to Istanbul, as he has already held talks with Ertugrul Dogan, who is expected to become the club’s next president.
If Dogan, who currently serves as the vice-president, is promoted, Gerrard has a good chance of being offered the position.
It is clear that Istanbul holds a special place in Gerrard’s heart, and if he were to make the move, it would be intriguing to see how he performs in the Turkish Super League.
As things stand, Galatasary are leading the league, nine points ahead of their arch-rivals Fenerbahce, while Trabzonspor are currently in sixth place.
Gerrard started his coaching career at Liverpool, where he managed the U18s at the academy, before moving to Scotland to take over as the manager of Rangers.
During his time in Glasgow, Gerrard guided Rangers to their 55th Scottish league title, thereby putting an end to Celtic’s hopes of winning ten consecutive titles.
Despite leaving for Aston Villa shortly after, he is still highly regarded by Rangers fans.
However, his time at Villa Park was marked by inconsistency, and he was sacked in October with the team languishing in 17th place in the Premier League.
If Gerrard aspires to become the manager of Liverpool in the future, he will need to restore his reputation, and hopefully, a successful tenure in Turkey will be the beginning of that journey.
