Lionel Messi’s hands Cristiano Ronaldo advantage in GOAT debate after World Cup announcement

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s intentions, Lionel Messi will not play in the 2026 World Cup.

PSG forward Lionel Messi announced today that this year’s tournament in Qatar will be his final as he prepares to retire from Argentina’s national team.

He said to Sebastian Vignolo: “This will be my last World Cup, for sure. The decision has been made.

“I am counting down the days to the World Cup. There is a bit of anxiety and nerves at the same time. Wanting it to be now and the nerves that were are already there, what is going to happen.

“It’s the last one, how are we going to do. Yes, on the one hand, we can’t wait for it to arrive and on the other hand, we’re scared of wanting it to go well.”

Some may consider the news premature because Messi, 35, will still be 38 by the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held closer to home in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Meanwhile, his long-time rival in the GOAT debate, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be 41 when the tournament begins, but he still wants to play for Portugal, according to reports.

Barring injury, both will play in their fifth World Cup next month, making them only the fifth and sixth players to do so. Ronaldo would make history if he went on to score six goals.

Despite winning continent-based tournaments, neither man has been able to lead his country to glory. Messi will have one more chance to avenge Argentina’s defeat in the 2014 World Cup final to Germany.
