Lionel Messi snubs Liverpool as he identifies seven PSG’s biggest rivals to Champions League glory
Lionel Messi of PSG has left Liverpool out of his list of contenders for the Champions League this season.
The Argentine rattled off seven teams he believes are in with a chance, and the electrifying Reds may be irritated that such a respected figure has passed them over for the pinnacle of club football.
Messi’s PSG team is also one of the favorites to win the Champions League, a feat they have yet to accomplish despite years of attempting.
They defeated Manchester City in Group A, which should put them in good stead to advance to the knockout stages.
Individually, the iconic attacker is off to a slow start in France, despite scoring an absolute stunner against the Blues.
Despite consistently falling short, PSG is one of a slew of strong English clubs and perennial heavyweights such as Bayern Munich that are expected to go all the way this season.
Despite the fact that Spanish football has lost the star quality that came with figures like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the 34-year-old named bitter rivals Real Madrid as part of the competing group.
He told L’Equipe: “It is true that the centre of attention is on PSG, but there are other very strong.
“Teams such as Chelsea, the Manchester sides [United and City], Real Madrid, who always respond, Inter Milan, Bayern.”
Being passed over would have been less painful for Liverpool if the attacker had not come up with such a long list of candidates.
This season, the Reds are the only unbeaten team in the Premier League.
They also have a recent Champions League history, having won the trophy in 2019 after defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the final, in addition to previous triumphs.
Messi could be forgiven in light of the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s team struggled with injuries last season, but they are certainly fit and firing this time around.
If the sides meet in the later rounds, Liverpool may relish the opportunity to make him pay for his comments, though PSG will undoubtedly be a difficult opponent for anyone this season.
When the Reds were drawn in a tough group with Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Porto, the knockout rounds appeared to be jeopardized.
Their perfect record after two games, on the other hand, is a testament to their quality, which Messi may be caught off guard by later in the tournament.
