Lionel Messi won his first major international trophy when Argentina won the Copa America in 2021, and current Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero was an integral part of that team.

In the summer of 2021, Spurs paid £42.5 million for Romero shortly after defeating Brazil in the Copa America final.

The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward reflected on his country’s success last year in the Netflix documentary Sean Eternos: Campeones de America [h/t Football.London]:

“Cuti’s appearance was extraordinary for us, for the future of the team and for that moment.”

Romero, 24 years old, is expected to make Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni’s FIFA World Cup squad for Qatar.

In fact, the former Juventus and Atalanta central defender is a lock to start on matchday 1.

He is as important to Argentina as he is to Tottenham. Romero has appeared in 13 games for Antonio Conte across all competitions.

He is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, but according to reports, he could return in time for Argentina’s November 22 opener against Saudi Arabia.

Romero mysteriously missed four games during Argentina’s 2021 Copa America campaign due to multiple fitness issues. However, his presence was crucial in the three games he did participate in.

He contributed to his team’s clean sheets against Uruguay and Paraguay in two 1-0 victories following a 1-1 draw against Chile. Then, he was a dominant force in the championship game against Brazil, which his team won again.

Messi, who is 11 years older than Cuti Romero, is 35 years old. Receiving such praise from one of the world’s best players and one of Argentina’s elder statesmen will give the young defender tremendous confidence heading into the tournament.
