Lionel Messi clarifies how Pep Guardiola ‘did a lot of harm’ to football

Lionel Messi explained how Pep Guardiola’s tenure as a manager has been detrimental to football.

In 2008, Guardiola was selected to succeed Frank Rijkaard as the manager of Barcelona.

The Catalan has become one of the greatest coaches of all time, winning the vast majority of league titles he has competed for in Spain, Germany, and England, in addition to two Champions Leagues with Barcelona.

Messi was one of the players who benefited the most from Guardiola’s coaching at Camp Nou, flourishing under the Spaniard, and he considers Guardiola to be the best manager he has ever had.

In fact, the Argentine claims Guardiola has hurt football since so many have attempted to imitate him and failed.

Pep is the best coach I’ve ever had,” Messi told Movistar.

“Everything he planned always ended up happening. He is special in the way he sees things, prepares for matches and communicates.

“Guardiola did a lot of harm to football too because it seemed too easy, so simple that everyone wanted to copy it. Later I found many ‘Guardiolas’ out there, and you realize what we did, what that was.”

Messi has since added Ligue 1 and the Copa America to the trophies he won at Barcelona while playing under Guardiola.

The only prize that eludes him is the World Cup, and this winter will likely be his last chance to claim it.

Argentina is one of the favorites to win the World Cup in Qatar, since they have not lost in over 30 matches.
