Lewandowski shares details of his chat with Messi after World Cup clash

Robert Lewandowski, a superstar for Barcelona, faced a Blaugrana legend in Lionel Messi during Poland’s Group C match against Argentina on Wednesday.

The game ended 2-0 in favor of Messi’s squad, advancing them to the quarterfinals. Nonetheless, Poland also advanced to the Round of 16, as Mexico’s 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia was not enough to get them through.

A minor altercation between Lewandowski and Lionel Messi during the match caught the attention of the spectators.

After committing a foul against the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, the Barcelona striker apologized to the Argentina captain but was rebuffed.

However, as they exchanged hugs and words after the game, it appeared that all was well between the two.

Lewandowski has now revealed what he said to the former Barcelona captain after Wednesday’s game, despite Messi’s refusal to disclose the conversation’s specifics.

“We talked a bit and it was fun. I told Messi that he was playing more defensively than usual, but sometimes that’s what the team needs,” Lewandowski told BILD (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

The 34-year-old striker continued, “That was very strange, yes: I was in the centre of the pitch defending, but I knew I had to help the team.”

In the Round of 16, Lewandowski’s Poland will face defending world champions France, where he will face Barcelona teammates Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde.

Messi and Argentina have lined up a Round of 16 match against the surprise qualifiers Australia, who eliminated Andreas Christensen and Denmark.
