Keith Hackett believes Anthony Taylor made the rash judgement not to award a penalty in the West Ham vs. Manchester City match.

The referee eventually pointed to the spot for Craig Dawson’s foul on Gabriel Jesus, but Hackett believes it was stonewall.

He believes that VAR has forced referees to take the easy way out, which should not be the case for officials heading to the World Cup in November.

Finally, Riyad Mahrez missed the penalty, giving the Hammers an important point in their bid for Europa League football.

Speaking to West Ham Zone about this incident, Hackett said, “That’s a nailed on penalty. Look at the brilliant position of Anthony Taylor.

With VAR we’re running the risk of developing lazy referees.

“A man going to the World Cup, should have given the penalty. There’s no need to go to the monitor.

“We got the right decision because of the VAR, but top class referees should be making those decisions without going to the screens.”

The Hammers will face Brighton in their final league game of the season, with dreams of finishing sixth still alive.

They will, however, require Crystal Palace to do them a favour when they face Manchester United, who currently hold the Europa League position.
