Klopp’s unmannered dig at Manchester United superstar could backfire on Liverpool just like Xavi
Learning the names of players that a manager is going to compete against should not be a difficult task.
However, it seems that Jurgen Klopp may require a reminder of who Wout Weghorst is, as he appeared to forget his name during a press conference prior to Manchester United’s visit to Anfield on Sunday.
He remarked: “Up front, the Dutch fella, is really physical, so it is a good set-up.”
Klopp gave Marcus Rashford a compliment, describing him as “incredible”. However, this may simply be a tactic to play with the opponent’s mindset, also known as “mind games.”
Klopp’s remarks about Weghorst could be interpreted as disrespectful towards the Manchester United player, which might give him extra motivation to perform well.
This situation is similar to Xavi’s reference to Bruno Fernandes as “the Portuguese guy” before a match between Manchester United and Barcelona, which motivated Fernandes to lead his team to victory, leaving Xavi unhappy. In the same vein, Weghorst will likely aim to make an impact in the upcoming match.
Weghorst has only scored one goal for Manchester United thus far, but he has been performing well, as demonstrated by his contribution to all three goals in the team’s victory over West Ham.
He created five chances during the match and possesses a strong mentality and an excellent work ethic.
Despite receiving negative comments about him during his career, he never gives up.
Nevertheless, he is determined to ensure that Klopp remembers his name, which could prove to be a significant blunder on the part of the Liverpool manager.
