Jurgen Klopp has asked Liverpool to recruit Marco Asensio this summer in order to complete his assault ahead of the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

It’s exactly one month until the first Premier League matchweek of the new season, and reports suggest Liverpool’s transfer activity is far from finished.

Sporting director Julian Ward has already done some fantastic job in his new capacity, and if reports are to be believed, he might add Marco Asensio to the ranks.

According to the Wednesday issue of the Spanish daily  SPORT (via Sport Witness), “Liverpool like Asensio.”

AC Milan’s interest in the attacker appears to have waned, prompting Asensio to “considering” a transfer to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp has routinely improved attacking players under his tutelage, transforming Roberto Firmino from an attacking midfielder into the best false nine in the world at his peak, Sadio Mane into a feared forward across Europe, and Mohamed Salah into the best right winger in the Premier League since his arrival at Liverpool.

Asensio is at a crossroads in his career at the age of 26.

On the one hand, he might choose a transfer that pays him much more than the £117,000 per week (£468,000 per month) he is currently earning at the Santiago Bernabeu.

On the other hand, he could make an audacious move and join a club like Liverpool, earning wages commensurate with his talent, but this would also highlight his stagnated career at Real Madrid.

If Liverpool’s interest is genuine, Klopp might develop Asensio into a world-class player and capitalise on the Spaniard’s enormous potential.

On his day, the left-footed forward is a genius capable of unlocking defences and scoring goals from extraordinary angles and ranges.

However, it is unknown whether he is equal to the challenge that the Premier League presents to newcomers.

A player leaving Real Madrid is always closely watched, and joining Liverpool would further heighten the expectations placed on his next move.

Asensio may not even be able to play at Liverpool because Mohamed Salah has just signed a new contract and will be the club’s first choice right winger till he leaves.

After sitting on the bench for the majority of the last several seasons at Real Madrid, Asensio is unlikely to accept a bench role.

Despite this, Klopp has a way of convincing players that they are appreciated, even if their playing time is limited.

Due to the departures of Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, that argument may not be as strong as it once was, but with so much football to play for top Premier League clubs and Liverpool’s lack of depth on the wings, Asensio would still play a lot of minutes for the Reds.

With Thiago’s arrival in 2020, Fabio Carvalho’s entry this summer, and speculations linking Liverpool to the likes of Gavi and Asensio, Klopp may shift to a more technical, possession-based approach in the future.

Of course, the German is unlikely to abandon his heavy-metal style of play entirely, but in order to stay at the top, Liverpool need a sustainable manner of playing and holding possession, and pinning opponents in their own half is a proven approach to victory.

The Real Madrid star would join Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Fabio Carvalho, and Asensio in Liverpool’s attack.
