Key Chelsea star left frustrated after deal offer worth over €70,000-a-week less than demands
According to the print edition of SportBILD via Sport Witness, Antonio Rudiger is dissatisfied with Chelsea’s latest contract offer.
The centre-contract back’s expires next summer, which means he can begin talks with foreign clubs in January, and there currently appears to be no positive movement toward a renewal with the Blues.
Rudiger has become a pillar of the team since Thomas Tuchel took over after being frozen out in the final months of Frank Lampard’s tenure as manager.
According to Sport Witness via SportBILD, the 28-year-old is looking for a contract worth €12 million per year, but Chelsea has only offered him €8.5 million so far.
The €3.5m difference between what Rudiger has been offered and what he wants to take home over a year is a significant difference of more than €70,000 per week.
Rudiger was instrumental after Tuchel took over as manager last season, making 25 appearances as the west London club recovered from a poor run to win the Champions League and finish in the top four.
According to Bild, Rudiger’s hometown powerhouses, Bayern Munich, would ‘easily’ sign off on the package that the defender is seeking.
While no one could have expected the Germany international to recover as well as he has after a difficult time under Lampard, Chelsea should be asking serious questions about how a player they signed for £33.3 million – according to BBC Sport – was ever allowed to be in this contract situation in the first place.
Rudiger has built on the momentum of last season’s resurgence this season, looking solid in 15 Premier League and European appearances for the Blues.
Tuchel’s men are first in the Premier League, and Rudiger is a major reason for that; he is the most important figure in a backline that is widely regarded as the best in the world right now.
