Tony Cascarino claims that Georginio Wijnadum’s departure from Liverpool has left a “big hole” in the Reds’ midfield.

The Dutch international left Anfield as a free agent in the summer after contract talks fell through.

Wijnadum signed a contract with PSG, and the Reds have struggled to adjust without him, with Jurgen Klopp admitting that his presence in the dressing room is more important than anything else.

However, Cascarino believes Liverpool have not been able to fill the void left by the former Newcastle player on the field.

The 3-2 defeat by West Ham, according to the pundit, shows that they have suffered without Wijnaldum because they were unable to cope with the physicality of the Hammers’ midfield.

He said: “The big miss for Liverpool is Gini Wijnaldum, who left a big hole when he went to PSG.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago do not do the same job, especially against big physical opposition such as Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek for West Ham.”

Klopp bid an emotional farewell to Wijnaldum, praising his “out-of-this-world” contribution to the club.

He said: “As a team we said our goodbyes to Gini at Anfield after the final game of the season. There was the public farewell on the pitch with the guard of honour. But then a more private occasion also.

“It was difficult for all of us because of how much this astonishing person means to the group. He’s been a big part of our lives for so long. There is nothing I won’t miss about him.”

“I will miss the player he is like crazy, highest-quality ability, one of the smartest players I have ever had the privilege to coach. His contribution was off the scale, a manager’s dream.”

“I met this wonderful player for the first time in my living room, in the first moment it clicked with us, he was a very friendly, very smart, very open person.”

Klopp added:
“It’s very emotional for me because I lose a friend, that is how it is, but it’s normal for these kind of things to happen. I am really sure that he will find a great place. Each club that is interested in him should call me and ask about him, then you will definitely take him because I couldn’t be more positive about what he did here.

Not only was he always available, 90 per cent of the time he played really, really well.

“People might not know exactly what I mean by good because sometimes it is not spectacular, but from a young kid who was an offensive 10, a winger at Newcastle and then came here and became such a controlling midfielder is a massive step, and you can only do that when you understand the game really in the right way.

“Everything will be fine, nobody can take away our memories from us, we will share them together. I told him that after the game, he sees it the same way. Goodbyes would not be tough if the time you had together was not worth it. It’s really tough because we had a great time together.”
