Jurgen Klopp sends update on double Liverpool injury blow after Man City defeat

Jurgen Klopp sends update on double Liverpool injury blow after Man City defeat

James Milner was substituted out of Thursday’s Carabao Cup match against Manchester City, and Jurgen Klopp is optimistic about the midfielder’s fitness.

The extremely experienced 36-year-old started as right-back for the last-16 fixture at his former Etihad Stadium stomping grounds, battling defensively at times but also assisting Fabio Carvalho’s first-half equalizer in a breathless 3-2 loss down the M62.

Milner’s evening was cut short by injury after only 38 minutes, with the ex-England international being replaced by Nat Phillips before halftime.

Klopp said after the game that one of his most trusted subordinates had felt a hamstring injury during the frantic pace of both teams’ first competitive games following the World Cup break, but he did not expect it to be significant at this stage.

“Millie felt something in the hamstring,” he told Sky Sports. “We still hope it is not an injury, but we will see. He felt something, but after 30 years in the business he said, ‘I don’t think it’s a lot’ so we will see.”

Liverpool introduced Jordan Henderson from the bench against City, whose own England World Cup stars John Stones, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish also entered the game after the break, although Kyle Walker remained on the bench.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was the only member of Gareth Southgate’s Qatar squad not to play, as Jurgen Klopp said that he was suffering from the same illness as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was able to enter the game at halftime at the Etihad.

Virgil van Dijk trained as expected at Kirkby on Thursday following his return from a post-World Cup holiday and should be eligible for the Boxing Day Premier League match against Aston Villa.

The same can be said for goalkeeper Alisson, whose compatriot Roberto Firmino missed the loss at City due to a calf injury received in training this week.

“We thought Trent was available but then he got ill, so that is what we have to wait for,” Klopp added.

“Virgil trained today [and] yesterday completely normal and should be ready for Monday, but we have to see who gets the virus until then.”

Regarding Firmino’s absence before to the game, Klopp stated, “We play mainly with the players who could do all the sessions now and had a break – apart from Bobby, who unfortunately got injured two days ago in training.

“Not a big one but big enough for this period. That’s why Darwin [Nunez] is now starting. He could’ve started anyway but Darwin is starting now.”

Already missing Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Arthur Melo due to injury, Liverpool anticipates the return of Curtis Jones soon.
