Jurgen Klopp issues ‘disrespectful’ response to Steven Gerrard query as Liverpool pray for upset
Jurgen Klopp has stated that he would not contact Steven Gerrard prior to Aston Villa’s match against Manchester City on Sunday.
Liverpool are hoping Gerrard’s Villa can pull off a massive upset at The Etihad and hand the Reds the Premier League championship.
If Villa escape loss against City, Liverpool can win the Premier League with a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
The presence of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on the last day has received a lot of attention, and Villa’s squad also features former Reds Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings, but Klopp believes it is ‘disrespectful’ to Wolves to focus on happenings at The Etihad.
Wolves have lost all seven Premier League matches with Liverpool since returning to the top level in 2018.
“I can only understand these situations by thinking about myself in that role,” said Klopp. “If I can play a game to help Dortmund or Mainz, it would give me extra motivation – but I don’t play, and Stevie doesn’t play. That’s a shame. It’s much more of a shame that Stevie isn’t playing than I’m not playing.
“Stevie will take it 100 percent seriously without me calling him or whatever. Lots of people at the club did it already but I didn’t!
“Aston Villa plays to win. It’s a difficult place to go. If you go there and don’t play 100 percent, you will get five or six, easily. If you are fully there then you have a chance to get a result, that’s how it is in football.
“But I’m not thinking about that at all. It’s completely disrespectful to Wolverhampton Wanderers because they don’t come here and want to be part of our celebrations. They come here and want to get three points and we have to be ready for this one and not the other one.”
