Jurgen Klopp gives his verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo controversial red card escape in Liverpool FC triumph over Manchester United

Jurgen Klopp has dismissed suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo should have been sent off during Manchester United’s weekend loss to Liverpool.

Manchester United were defeated 5-0 by their fierce rivals on Sunday afternoon, adding to the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has only one win in the last five Premier League games.

At Old Trafford, Solskjaer’s team trailed by four goals at halftime, but they could have gone in a man down after star striker Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in a controversial incident before the break.

The Portuguese star narrowly avoided a red card in first-half stoppage time after losing possession to Curtis Jones, lashing out at the youngster in frustration, and then swiping for the ball as the Liverpool midfielder lay on the floor.

It became a flashpoint in the game when Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk remonstrated with the referee before players from both sides piled in to calm things down.

After the game, Klopp was asked if he thought Anthony Taylor should have sent Ronaldo off, but instead chose to diffuse the situation.

“I saw it of course,” he told reporters after the match. “For me it looked like it (a red) but in the end I got told it wasn’t because he made contact with the ball.

“I don’t want Cristiano getting a red card. I got convinced, or told at least it was fine.”
