Jorginho may not remain at Arsenal, as his departure is ‘likely’ just days after signing for £12 million
According to reports, Arsenal midfielder Jorginho could leave the club as early as the summer.
The Italian only joined the Gunners on the final day of the transfer window, but it has been speculated that his time in north London will be brief.
As a result of Mohamed Elneny’s knee injury suffered during training, Arsenal required midfield reinforcements. The Egyptian is expected to miss the remainder of the season following surgery last week.
Arsenal’s top target was Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but the Seagulls refused to sell after the Gunners made two offers. Arsenal pursued Jorginho and completed a £12 million transfer with Chelsea.
He signed a contract with the Emirates for 18 months. Nevertheless, according to transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, he may only fulfill six months of the contract.
Even if he wins the Premier League with the Gunners, Jorginho may return to Italy at the conclusion of the season, according to Bailey. Bailey stated on the Talking Transfers podcast:
“He’s an upgrade. Bringing him in now, one player doesn’t make a team, but this one player could have such an impact on this Arsenal team.
“He has experience, he’s impressive. I’m not surprised that Arteta is delighted with this. This could be the signing that wins them the title.
“I don’t think it has affected their long-term transfer ambitions. I’ve been told by someone and they said that they wouldn’t be surprised if Jorginho lifts the title and then still moves back to Italy in the summer.”
In the summer, Arsenal intends to sign West Ham star Declan Rice. They are also still interested in Caicedo and may resume their pursuit during the offseason.
Mikel Arteta may drop Jorginho in the pecking order at the Emirates if he secures his two top targets. Arteta did speak highly of Jorginho during his Friday press conference.
When asked what he will contribute to the team, the Spaniard responded: “His intelligence, his personality, his leadership skills, the way he understands our way of playing, and the quality he has to implement that in football matches. He’s a player who will fit in really well with what we want to do.
“You have to adapt to the circumstances that we had. Obviously the significant injury to Mo meant we had to have a plan behind him. That probably wasn’t the case before the injury happened, but we have adapted and we have improved the squad.”
