John Terry brutally honest Graham Potter verdict following Chelsea draw vs West Ham United
John Terry has emphasized the need for Chelsea to significantly improve their performance after drawing 1-1 with West Ham United in their latest match.
The recent string of results, with only one win in their past eight games, has resulted in Chelsea being in ninth place, 10 points behind Newcastle United who hold fourth place in the Premier League.
During the match against West Ham, Chelsea took the lead through Joao Felix’s goal, but the lead was short-lived as former Chelsea defender, Emerson Palmieri, scored for West Ham.
Despite calls for a penalty after Conor Gallagher’s shot hit Tomas Soucek’s arm, no penalty was awarded.
Terry was asked during a Q&A session on his official Instagram page if he had anything to do with Potter’s September appointment. However, Terry quickly clarified that this was not the case.
“Absolutely not,” Terry replied on his Instagram story. “I tweeted that I loved watching Brighton play this style of play. I have nothing to do with the first-team.
“I’m working with the Under 18s and 21s and love my role. Clearly results are not good enough and we need to get a settled team.”
The recent mid-season transfer window saw Chelsea make eight new signings, leading to a period of transition for the team. Despite not securing a win, Graham Potter stated that the recent performance against West Ham was a positive step forward.
“I felt today was a step forward,” Potter said after the game. “Performance-wise started the game well.
“You’re always rocked by the goal because that’s football and something for us to learn from and do better with. Overall, a step forward to the week that we’ve used. We’ve had a good training week but when it’s not reflected in three points, there’s always stuff you can do better.”
“It’s a challenge [for all the new signings to gel] but it’s my job,” the Chelsea head coach continued. “It’s exciting, it tests you because you have to make sure you communicate properly and manage the environment because otherwise it can go not very positive.
“The week has been a really good training week, spirit in the group is really good, not just the team. They know what it is, they’re not stupid. There’s big competition for places.
“We need healthy competition, we need training to be better and better because that’s how you improve. Then you just have to have honest conversations and respect the fact players will be disappointed because that’s normal.
“It would be strange if it wasn’t. These are top professionals, top people, they handle themselves well.”
