John Terry and Jorginho react after Chelsea superstar wins the AFCON last night
Following his Africa Cup of Nations victory yesterday evening, Edouard Mendy received love and congratulations from several members of the Chelsea family.
Mendy received the trophy last night after Senegal defeated Egypt in a penalty shootout.
Because neither team was able to break the tie in normal time, the final was decided by spot-kicks.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper saved Mohanad Lasheen’s effort, giving Sadio Mane of Liverpool the chance to win the Champions League.
Mane had missed a 12-yard penalty earlier in the game, but he more than made up for it to secure Senegal’s first-ever AFCON victory.
While the Premier League forward was named the tournament’s Player of the Tournament, one of his teammates also received an individual award.
Mendy won the competition’s Best Goalkeeper award after keeping another clean sheet in the final.
The 29-year-old kept five shutouts in total, with none conceded during the group stages.
Understandably, the Chelsea goalkeeper etched his country’s triumph into history by uploading a photo to Instagram.
A photo of him kissing the trophy and another of his penalty heroics were accompanied by the caption ‘History.’
The comment section below was swallowed up by a sea of infectious replies, mostly from people of the blue persuasion.
Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso, and Cesar Azpilicueta were among those who reacted positively.
Mendy’s year in 2022 has already been eventful, and we’ve only just begun February.
Along with his AFCON title, he was named FIFA’s Best Goalkeeper last month.
Add to that UEFA’s equivalent honor, a Champions League and UEFA Super Cup winner’s medal, and Chelsea’s unrivaled shot-stopper is amassing quite a collection.
He could win the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and another European trophy before the season is out.
