John Terry addresses Nemanja Vidic controversy as he names best defender of all-time
John Terry, the legendary Chelsea captain, has weighed in on the debate over who was better between him and former Manchester United star Nemanja Vidic.
Terry and Vidic are widely regarded as two of the best defenders in Premier League history, with debate raging since they were on the field as to who was the better player.
During his 20-year career at Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa, the Blues’ star icon won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and the Champions League.
Vidic was also a huge success at Old Trafford, where he helped United win five league titles and three League Cups.
Both players were also regulars in the PFA’s Team of the Year, appearing four times each, while Vidic was named Premier League Player of the Year twice.
Terry has now addressed the debate, admitting his admiration for the former Red Devils star.
“Everyone will have different opinions, but Vidic was an unbelievable defender,” Terry said in an Instagram Q&A when asked about the debate over him and Vidic.
“I get asked this a lot and the big thing that allows you to be spoken of as one of the very best is longevity. Vidic done this year, after year, after year. Top guy as well.”
Terry was also asked who he thought was the best defender of all time, and he chose former AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini.
Maldini spent his entire 25-year career at the San Siro, where he won seven Serie A titles, one as part of the Invincibles, and five Champions League titles.
The Italian has played at both right-back and center-back and is widely regarded as the best defender in football history, with Terry now adding his name to the list of his admirers.
