Joel Glazer’s standpoint on Harry Kane swap deal as Man Utd told transfer is “no-brainer”
Ian Wright has urged Manchester United to offer out-of-favour striker Anthony Martial in a player-plus-cash deal for Harry Kane this summer; however, Joel Glazer may oppose such a plan.
United have intensified their pursuit of the Tottenham fan who, with the exception of loan stints earlier in his career, has spent his entire career with the North London club. Kane’s Spurs contract expires next summer, and the club may be tempted to sell him this summer.
The 29-year-old Kane is reportedly on a shortlist of three strikers that United hopes to sign this summer.
Their admiration for the England captain is unwavering, but their interest in signing him will likely depend on his contract situation, with Spurs possibly believing that an exit would be mutually advantageous for all parties.
Any move for a top-tier striker would likely signal the end of Anthony Martial’s eight-year stay at Old Trafford. The Frenchman has struggled with fitness once again this season, and when he has been given the opportunity to play for Erik ten Hag’s squad, he has failed to impress.
Wright believes that offering Martial in exchange for Kane would be a “no-brainer,” but the club’s Glazer family previously blocked Jose Mourinho’s attempts to sell the forward – when the former manager attempted to allow Martial to leave in order to lure then-Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic to Old Trafford.
Joel Glazer intervened and refused to approve the Frenchman’s departure despite the obvious benefits. He has reportedly compared Martial to the Brazilian legend Pele and obviously holds him in the highest regard.
“If Man United came now, Harry Kane with a year left, let’s say they put £60million on the table and we’ll throw in someone – Martial, whatever – it’s a very good deal,” Arsenal legend Wright told his Wrighty’s House podcast.
“If Man United have got any serious thinking about what we need to do next, it’s a No.9. It seems like a no-brainer that Harry Kane is the person. He takes them somewhere else.”
Martial has scored five goals in 13 appearances for United this season, but has scored just 84 goals in eight seasons at Old Trafford, a conversion rate that has caused him to fluctuate in and out of the starting lineup.
United have since signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Edinson Cavani, and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the aforementioned quartet leaving the club.
However, the club’s efforts to acquire a long-term first-team striker this summer, whether it be Harry Kane or someone else, could spell the end of Anthony Martial’s time with the club. In light of the club’s uncertain future under Glazer ownership, the Frenchman’s primary supporter at Old Trafford may also leave.
