Jesse Lingard reveals what Man Utd fan shouted at him during 5-0 Liverpool defeat
Jesse Lingard has broken his silence after appearing to clash with a supporter during Liverpool’s 5-0 thrashing.
Lingard was an unused substitute for Manchester United, but he was booed by fans in the Old Trafford home end.
Fans appeared to express their feelings to Lingard, who was warming up near the corner flag, at some point during the first half.
It’s unclear what was yelled at Lingard, but he appears to respond by saying, “I’m not on the pitch.”
Following the spread of a video of the incident on social media, the midfielder took to Twitter to clarify what was said.
“It wasnt abuse! he said “work harder” like I’m not already doing that day in day out!” he tweeted.
“And I said “I’m not even on the pitch” end of!!”
Lingard didn’t make it onto the pitch during the defeat.
However, United’s captain, Harry Maguire, played the entire 90 minutes and bore some of the blame for his team’s five goals.
“We apologise to the fans, it was nowhere near good enough for this club. They stuck with us right to the end and we appreciate that but as a club we have to do better,” he told Sky Sports.
“I am so disappointed, we gave them so many chances. They were so clinical, we had a lot of chances ourselves but I am a defender and to concede four in the first half especially at Old Trafford is nowhere near good enough.
“As a player I know myself. I’ll be looking at myself and my individual performance.
“We have to stick together, there is no point blaming each other but look at ourselves. Look in the mirror when we go home tonight and think where we can do better.”
