Jamie Carragher reveals why Man Utd star Rashford will defeat Haaland to POTY award
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, has given three reasons why he thinks that Marcus Rashford from Manchester United will win the Premier League Players’ Player of the Year award over Erling Haaland.
Despite having 12 fewer goals than Manchester City’s star player, Rashford has been in impressive form since the World Cup. Carragher believes that Rashford has a good chance of winning the award because he may be preferred by his fellow players.
Carragher explained that players tend to pay more attention to who is in better form when they are filling out their ballots for the award. Since returning from the World Cup, Rashford has only failed to score in one league game, which makes him a strong contender.
Although Haaland has scored considerably more goals, Carragher believes that the early season goals that put him at the top of the goal scorers’ list will not be as significant in the debate for the award.
Additionally, Carragher thinks that Rashford’s all-around abilities as a striker compared to Haaland will also sway the voters in his favor. Furthermore, he believes that voters will appreciate Rashford’s comeback after having his position at Manchester United questioned last season, especially after a disappointing campaign.
“Rashford’s form under Erik ten Hag is taking his game to that next level. His all-round displays this season are superior to Haaland’s because United are set-up to get the most from him.
“I am not for one second suggesting Rashford is a superior striker and footballer to Haaland. But the PFA Player of the Year vote is all about timing. Having been in a dressing room when the forms arrived to fill in, I can assure you no-one is thinking about who was the best player in September and October.”
It’s the players vote I’m talking about.

The players won’t vote after the next 16 games, probably the end of March.
My point is most players think about what’s happened in the last few months, not in Sept/Oct! https://t.co/EZoqFTwbq5
On Sunday, Rashford will have an opportunity to win his first silverware of the season as Manchester United face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
However, Ten Hag, the coach of Ajax, has confirmed that Rashford is uncertain to play in the match due to an injury sustained during the Europa League win over Barcelona on Thursday.
Nevertheless, Carragher thinks that if Rashford is fit and able to lead Manchester United to victory in the cup final, it would further convince the voters to choose him as the Premier League Players’ Player of the Year.
“It is the six weeks before the vote that is most influential,” Carragher added. “So if Rashford inspires United to victory over Newcastle United in Wembley’s Carabao Cup final what might now be a 50-50 shout will edge in his favour. Rashford’s revival is an inspiration for every footballer suffering a tough time. When hard work meets immense talent, it can and will come good.”
