Ivan Toney clarifies why Arsenal can win the Premier League after his goals down Man City

Ivan Toney clarifies why Arsenal can win the Premier League after his goals down Man City

Ivan Toney is the toast of the red half of north London after scoring both goals in Brentford’s 2-1 victory against Manchester City to strengthen Arsenal’s title aspirations.

Toney’s brace ensured that Mikel Arteta’s squad would be atop the standings on Christmas Day for the first time in 15 years, whatever of the outcome of the Gunners’ away game against Wolves. Fortunately for Arsenal, they prevailed 2-0 at Molineux to strengthen their edge over Pep Guardiola’s squad to five points.

Arsenal’s 37 points from their first 14 league games is their greatest ever start to a season, although many, including their own fans, refuse to get caught up in talk of a title challenge.

Whether they choose to acknowledge it or not, the Gunners faithful will find solace in Brentford’s magnificent performance, which proves the great City can be defeated.

Toney’s thoughts on how the Bees addressed the mental part of the work should make for fascinating reading for the Arsenal players.

“What we’re doing week in, week out on the training pitch, we can do things like this,” the striker told BT Sport.

“They might be Man City but they’re humans and humans can lose games. Dedication and wanting to work hard for each other, we showed that today and I think we deserved the three points at the end.”

There is still much football to be played, and much can change between now and the final sprint of the season, but morale at the Emirates is at its greatest level in quite some time.

With this in mind, Arsenal may be looking forward to their matchups with City, which will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the final standings.

The first meeting had to be rescheduled due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September, thus they are yet to face off this term.

After taking a 1-0 lead versus City at the Emirates on New Year’s Day of the previous season, Arsenal came close to scoring an amazing victory, but a late collapse allowed Guardiola to get one over on his old assistant once again.

Arsenal’s January transfer market action has been the subject of much speculation, with Brazilian midfielder Danilo and Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhailo Mudryk both linked with a move to the Emirates.

Should any or both sign, Arsenal might be in position to cause City the kind of problems that Toney did on Saturday afternoon, in what could be a pivotal weekend in the title fight
