Ivan Rakitic taunts Romelu Lukaku’s horror display – insisting Croatia owe him ‘vacation’
Ivan Rakitic could not resist taking a little jab at Romelu Lukaku after Croatia eliminated Belgium from the FIFA World Cup on Thursday afternoon.
Lukaku had a series of golden opportunities to put Belgium’s golden generation into the knockout rounds, and potentially their final opportunity to win a trophy. The former Chelsea player, though, botched his lines.
Rakitic was so pleased with the outcome that he resorted to social media to express his gratitude to Lukaku. Rakitic, who retired from international football in 2020, joked that the Belgian great owed him a vacation.
In a video that went viral, Rakitic joked: “Let’s go Lukaku! We have to pay him a month of vacation in Split. Let’s go!”
Lukaku’s former Inter Milan teammate Ivan Perisic stated: “I was with him for two or three minutes after the game. This is football, once you score, another time you miss.
“He’s a really strong player. Now I hope he can win as many trophies as possible with the Inter shirt. For us, the most important thing was to pass the group. We played a good game, as did they. But I think, considering the three games, we deserved to go ahead in this World Cup.”
Lukaku departed the field in tears following a performance that supporters deemed to be among the worst in World Cup history.
He had to be consoled by Thierry Henry before he punched a plastic shield that comprised a portion of the Belgian dugout.
