‘It’s weird’: Arsenal told what they have done just before the World Cup is ‘so silly’
According to ESPN, European football expert Gab Marcotti believes Arsenal’s decision to give Edu Gaspar the role of Sporting Director is “weird” and “so silly.”
Edu appears to have been promoted by name, and he also becomes the club’s first-ever Sporting Director, but Marcotti sees no difference in what he was doing before, other than a change in job title.
It’s been a long road for the former Arsenal player, who, like Mikel Arteta, has been through the wringer in north London.
There were times when fans demanded his head, but he, like the man in the dugout, rode through it all and is now riding that wave.
But when the club decided to give him the role of Sporting Director just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, European football expert Marcotti struggled to make sense of it all.
“Arsenal have appointed a Sporting Director… and it’s Edu,” said Marcotti. “It’s weird for me because he is already there. This was the job he was doing, right?!
“What’s the difference? Is it a different job title? But it’s so silly. I hope they gave him more money and more power since they changed his title.
“I wondered about this. What was his title before? Now he’s a Sporting Director? (As opposed to the technical director role). Whatever works for you. It shows you can sign Willian and David Luiz, but still come back.”
While Arteta deserves a lot of credit for what he’s doing on the training ground and keeping the Gunners at the top of the Premier League tree.
It’s come as a result of what Edu has done in the transfer market, including identifying a few gems.
Yes, there have been disastrous calls to sign players like Willian, but while one Brazilian did not pan out, another, Gabriel Martinelli, has proven to be an absolute gem.
