Italy could play at the Qatar 2022 World Cup after ‘more concrete’ scandal emerge

According to Italian authorities, Italy STILL has a chance to play in the 2022 World Cup.

Following their 1-0 play-off defeat to North Macedonia in March, Roberto Mancini’s side failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup for the second time in a row.

However, if Ecuador pulls back from the tournament, the defending European champions could be awarded a spot in Qatar.

FIFA is investigating Ecuador for allegedly fielding an ineligible player in World Cup qualifying.

Chile claims that Ecuador’s Byron Castillo is actually Colombian and has lied about his age.

If this is true, FIFA rules stipulate that the South American country may be forced to renounce their World Cup spot.

Former member of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) Franco Chimenti is still hopeful that the four-time World Cup winners would play in the World Cup and sees a “concrete” chance as a result of Ecuador’s potential blunder.

“There is still a chance to see Italy at the World Cup and it’s more concrete than what people think,” he said via Football Italia

“Apparently, Ecuador have used a player who was not allowed to be on the pitch and could pay for it.”

Chimenti went on to describe how the international football’s governing body may offer Italy a way back into the World Cup.

“If it happens, another country should replace them and the FIFA rules state that the highest country in the FIFA ranking should be recalled, at the moment, it is Italy,” he added.

Italy hasn’t competed in a World Cup since 2014, when they won Euro 2020.

They missed out on a spot in Russia and, for the time being, will not be in Qatar.
