‘It was like they won the league!’ – Ashley Young bashes Arsenal’s celebrations
Ashley Young, defender for Aston Villa, has slammed Arsenal’s celebrations following their 1-0 victory on Saturday, claiming that the home team was the only one that looked like scoring in the second half.
The Gunners’ prospects of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League next season were boosted by Bukayo Saka’s first-half goal, with Villa only managing their first shot on goal in the 94th minute.
The save by stand-in goalkeeper Bernd Leno elicited frenzied celebrations from Arsenal’s players when the final whistle blew seconds later.
The players then stayed on the pitch at Villa Park for a while, saluting the away end, singing along with shouts, and handing out shirts to fans.
But Young is the latest opposition player to argue Arsenal’s celebrations were a little too raucous – Wolves’ Ruben Neves also dug out the Gunners last month – and believes it demonstrates how hard they had to work in Saturday’s game.
“We want to make this a tough place to come and I think it is a tough place,” he told VillaTV afterwards.
“You saw the way they celebrated, to be honest it was like they won the league. But it shows they found it tough.
“We want to be in those European places, we want to get the club back there, and everyone’s got that ambition to get the club back there.
“So we want to make it a tough place to come, but we want to be winning games as well.”
Young also felt Arsenal were fortunate to leave Villa Park with all three points, claiming that the home side dominated the game in the second half and appeared to be the most likely to score the next goal.
He continued: “In the second half we played much better football, we were all on the front foot and we were looking like the only team that was going to go and get that goal and it’s disappointing we weren’t able to today.
“It’s one of those things. On another day, if we started the game like we started the second half, it would have been a totally different story.
“Or if one of them [half chances] goes in it puts Arsenal even more on the back foot and the fans get behind us and we go even more full throttle to try and get a second goal. On a different day it could have been a different story.”
