‘In the final hours’ – Liverpool has made a late attempt to sign a ‘fantastic’ midfielder
Brazilian journalist Matheus Leal reports that Liverpool has “made an offer” to buy Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.
Luiz, who was acquired from Manchester City in 2019, was initially a revelation for Villa but has since fallen out of favor with Steven Gerrard.
As a result, the 24-year-old Brazil international has been linked to Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, and AS Roma this summer, but he is still still a member of Gerrard’s squad.
However, having entered the final year of a contract and with Liverpool being connected to a number of midfielders, a new report suggests the Reds have made an official move…
Leal, a journalist for the Brazilian website Torcedores.com, stated on Twitter that the Merseyside giants have submitted an offer for the nine-cap ace.
He stated: “Brazilian Douglas Luiz could leave Aston Villa for Liverpool in the final hours of the window. Liverpool have made an offer of £20 million for the midfielder, who (would) welcome the change of team. Aston Villa play hard and look to win (earn) a little more.”
With an estimated market value of £34.2 million (Transfermarkt), Julian Ward and FSG would have to view the signing of Luiz for anything close to the rumored cost as an amazing piece of business.
With manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledging the need for further midfield reinforcements to bolster the Anfield side, the Brazilian dynamo’s versatility to function in either a conventional central midfield or defensive role makes him the ideal solution.
Gregg Evans, a Villa writer, described Luiz as a “fantastic player” last season. In the Premier League, Luiz won 4.4 duels and 1.7 tackles per game while completing 87% of his passes.
The gem born in Rio de Janeiro is a potential alternative for Klopp and co, even at this late stage of the transfer window, due to his current form, likely inexpensive fee, and versatility.
