Liverpool were looking for an explanation after a stunning defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, which left them without a win three games into the new season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team was chasing a historic quadruple a few months ago. But things haven’t gone as planned this season, and it only got worse as Liverpool saw a struggling United overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges on and off the field to win 2-1.

United’s Jadon Sancho scored in the 16th minute, and Marcus Rashford doubled the hosts’ lead in the second half.

Liverpool equalised through Mohamed Salah, but United held on to win, leaving Klopp’s side five points behind defending champions Manchester City and seven points behind early leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool’s midfield was heavily criticised after a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United, who are near the bottom of the Premier League table.

One image shared on social media perfectly illustrated the obvious dysfunction in the middle of the park, with the Reds midfield numbers scattered haphazardly across the turf.

As a United midfield ran virtually unopposed without Fabinho on the field, there was a distinct lack of shape or a sense that any of the options in the department had ever played together before.
