Iheanacho discloses the true reasons why he left Manchester City to join Leicester City

Kelechi Iheanacho, a forward for the Super Eagles, has disclosed the real reasons he left Manchester City for Leicester City in the summer of 2017.

Iheanacho arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2014 after helping Nigeria win the FIFA under-17 World Cup the year prior.

A year after joining Manchester City, head coach Manuel Pellegrini moved the teenager to the first team.

The youth went on to make 64 appearances for City, scoring 21 goals and assisting on eight more. Iheanacho was also a member of the 2016 League Cup-winning City squad.

The dismissal of the Pellegrini  and the hiring of former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola changed everything.

Iheanacho saw less playing time under Guardiola, and when it became apparent that he was not in the Spaniard’s long-term plans, it was time for him to depart.

Iheanacho admits that he had offers from other clubs, but that he developed a fondness for Leicester City during their remarkable Premier League championship season.

Despite the fact that he plays for City, Iheanacho reveals that he rooted for Leicester to win the title and applauded when they miraculously did so.

Iheanacho confirms that the signing of Wilfred Ndidi, his Super Eagles colleague, also played a significant impact in his choice to sign with Leicester City in August.

Both players became close friends and were vital members of the 2021 Leicester squad that won the FA Cup for the first time ever.

“Everything changed at Manchester City so I had to find somewhere else,” Iheanacho told LCFC. “There were a couple of options and clubs, but Leicester City was the one for me.

“It’s crazy because when I was playing at Man City, I supported Leicester as well in the season they won the league because it was fantastic what they did. When they won the trophy, I was celebrating, I was happy.

“I thought it would be a good move for me to go there and a place where I would enjoy my football. It’s a family club with lovely people. My family and everyone around me supported it and they said it would be a very good place to go.

“He (Wilfred Ndidi) came in January that season, so I knew he was there. I didn’t get to speak to him but knowing my friend was there was nice. If I needed any support or anything, I knew he would tell me.”

Earlier reports by Soccernet said that Iheanacho had no intention of signing with Manchester City in 2014 since he desired to show himself at a smaller club.

After his father convinced him that he could succeed in one of England’s most prestigious clubs, he changed his mind.
