“I would have him over both” – Journo maintains 26 y/o PL star better than McTominay & Fred at Man Utd

Journalist Luke Hatfield believes that John McGinn would start in Manchester United’s midfield ahead of Scott McTominay and Fred.

Since Villa’s promotion to the Premier League two years ago, the Scottish international has been one of the Premier League’s most underappreciated midfielders, missing only 12 league games in that time.

In response to United’s recent slump in all competitions, ex-Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor told  talkSPORT that McGinn is better than anything they currently have at Old Trafford.

He said: “I say it every time I see him play but when Fred gets on the ball, it’s just sloppy passes and he’ll give it away. Even when he’s in there to win the ball he doesn’t do that. I just don’t see why he’s in that team.

“There’s a lot of central midfielders who would walk into that Manchester United team. John McGinn, walks into that midfield.”

McGinn (6.89) has a higher average WhoScored rating than the United duo this season, with McTominay at 6.71 and Fred slightly higher at 6.72.

The Villa midfielder has had another strong start to the season, scoring once, a stunning volley against Watford on the opening day, in six appearances to help the Midlands club remain in the top half heading into the latest international break, despite a 2-1 loss at Tottenham on Sunday.

McGinn’s recent form has seen him linked with an audacious summer move to United’s north west rivals Liverpool as a potential Gini Wijnaldum replacement, with Jurgen Klopp seeing firsthand what he’s capable of during Villa’s 7-2 victory over his team last season.

When asked about Agbonlahor’s comments about Manchester United, Hatfield agreed about McGinn.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “As opposed to the McGinn thing, I would have McGinn over both of the two central midfielders, not including Pogba and Fernandes at Manchester United.”

It’s almost comical to discuss someone who was playing for Hibernian three years ago as being good enough to play for the Red Devils.

Many would attribute this to United’s midfield’s lack of quality, but that would be unfair to McGinn, who has been one of the most consistent performers outside the top six over the last two years.

United will obviously have more high-profile targets than McGinn, but it would be fair to say that bringing him in would improve the club’s midfield.
