‘I will fight’: ‘Incredible’ Liverpool player believes Klopp may use him in the first-team come next season
Sepp van den Berg, a Liverpool youngster, has claimed that he wants to stay and compete for a role under Jurgen Klopp next season rather than going out on loan again.
The now-20-year-old joined the Reds in the summer of 2019 from Dutch club Zwolle.
A lot was expected of him, and because of his position and country, parallels to Virgil van Dijk appeared soon.
Van den Berg, on the other hand, has only appeared four times for Liverpool’s senior team. He was loaned out to Preston North End in February of last year and has played extensively for them over the last 15 months.
The Dutchman, who Greg Cunningham described as “incredible,” is poised to return to Anfield this summer, and he believes he has a chance to start for Liverpool next season.
In terms of his future, Van den Berg stated, as reported by Voetbal Primeur: “The intention is that I participate in the preparation and then conquer my spot in the dressing room.
“At the same time, I know that the competition is cut-throat. This summer, I will fight for a place in the starting line-up.
“That’s what I hope for; that’s what I dream of (playing with Van Dijk). That’s my goal towards next season.
“The World Cup can help me with that. It will be a long and tough season. A lot of guys will leave or be away temporarily. Then maybe you get the chance to stay just a little bit earlier. I must then see to take that.”
This season, Liverpool has the second-best defence in the Premier League. Only Manchester City have conceded less goals this season than Jurgen Klopp’s team, and their center-halves deserve a lot of respect.
Van Dijk is the star, but his teammates in the back have also performed admirably. Joel Matip has been fantastic for Liverpool, while youthful Ibrahima Konate has also impressed in his first season with the club.
As a result, Joe Gomez, a fantastic centre-half in his own right, has scarcely gotten a look in, making you question if Van den Berg has any chance of breaking into Klopp’s side next season.
It will be intriguing to watch what happens with the 20-year-old this summer, but if his statements are any indication, he wants to stay at Liverpool and has no ambitions to go out on loan again.
