‘I was so scared’: Marc Cucurella reveals the Chelsea player he was so worried about facing last season

Marc Cucurella admitted to being “so scared” of facing Romelu Lukaku against Chelsea last season.

Cucurella, 24, is a talented defender who has made an excellent start to his Chelsea career after joining from Brighton this summer.

The energetic Spaniard is best known as a full-back or wing-back, but he can also play as a left-sided centre-back in a back three.

He recalls a Brighton game against the Blues last season, when preparing to face Lukaku was a scary prospect.

Chelsea’s new boy has told an intriguing story about Lukaku, whose return to the Premier League last season would have scared many defenders.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old centre-forward struggled to regain his best form in Thomas Tuchel’s side last season. That is why the powerful striker has left Chelsea on a season-long loan to Inter Milan.

“I never imagined playing in this left centre-back position but I remember the first game I played there was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I saw the line-up and I was so scared to play there against [Romelu] Lukaku because I thought that’s impossible for me!” Cucurella said.

“I don’t know why but I played really good, maybe because I liked the style of the team and my team-mates, which helped me a lot.”

The change of scenery appears to have done Lukaku the world of good.

He’s returned on loan to his former club Inter Milan, where he had a lot of success as a clinical goalscorer.

He scored his first goal of the season on the first day of Serie A against Leece, so it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses over the next year.

Craig Burley claims Lukaku stepped onto the pitch last season with “fear,” becoming the latest in a long line of Chelsea’s No.9s to underwhelm.

He possesses all of the characteristics that would make the majority of Premier League defenders fear him, but something hasn’t clicked for him in the last year.
