‘I told everybody’: Paul Merson declares 22-year-old Chelsea star is turning out to be absolutely brilliant
Chelsea’s Kai Havertz, according to Paul Merson, is now proving to be the type of player he thought he was.
Havertz, 22, is having a very fruitful stretch in the Blues lineup right now, with a string of consecutive starts.
The German forward is Thomas Tuchel’s favourite number nine, however he can drop into more creative positions if Romelu Lukaku is on the pitch at the same moment.
Havertz, who is currently on a roll, now has 11 goals and five assists in all competitions this season.
It has to be about capitalizing on this momentum at Stamford Bridge for the youngster.
To be fair, his debut Chelsea season last year did not go as planned.
He atoned for his mistakes by scoring the game-winning goal in the Champions League final.
However, it appears that Blues fans are beginning to recognize the great talent that made him a huge hit at Bayer Leverkusen this season.
Merson believes Havertz is developing into an outstanding player:
“I told everybody about Kai Havertz earlier this season – what a player he’s turning out to be!” Merson Sportskeeda.
“It took him a bit of time as he struggled with COVID-19 at the start, but now we’re beginning to see the player who absolutely ripped it up in Germany. The goal he scored against Newcastle United, in my opinion, is undoubtedly one of the goals of the 2021-22 Premier League season so far.”
A search through the archives reveals Merson projecting Havertz will be a “superstar” last season.
Havertz’s reputation in Europe a few years ago was as one of the top young players in the game, so it’s no surprise that he’s reached his recent standards.
His £71 million transfer price had the potential to be a terrific investment from the start.
Of course, he’ll have to maintain this form for a longer period of time.
However, the fact that he has found a role in this Chelsea team and is playing with a lot of confidence helps him a lot.
