‘I spoke to him’: Kieran Trippier reveals what he told Matt Doherty after Tottenham released him
Kieran Trippier and Matt Doherty, both right-backs, have departed Tottenham for Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
Matt Doherty’s sudden departure from Tottenham took many by surprise, as it was initially expected to be a loan move until he was eventually released.
This was because Tottenham had reached its limit for loaning out players overseas and decided to release one of its four right wing-back options.
In addition, Djed Spence has joined Ligue 1 club Rennes on loan, leaving Pedro Porro and Emerson Royal to compete for a spot.
Kieran Trippier shared his thoughts with Rio Ferdinand on his FIVE YouTube podcast about what he told Matt Doherty regarding following in his footsteps. Trippier stated, “I spoke to Doherty as well.”
“About how much he’ll enjoy his defending and the whole city and stuff, to give him an insight and help him.
“That’s important that he has got someone to lean on, it’s not easy going abroad and going out of your comfort zone but it was an unbelievable experience and something I’ll look back on forever.”
Doherty has a unique and surprising opportunity to challenge himself at a big club, as Trippier suggests, and step out of his familiar environment.
Trippier took advantage of this chance and became a La Liga champion, earning respect from his Atletico Madrid teammates and fans.
Although Doherty has limited time to settle in, he still has the potential to make a significant impact before all parties reassess in the summer.
