‘I never heard from Rohr’ – World Cup-bound striker and Chelsea product clarifies decision to choose Canada over Nigeria

Ike Ugbo, a striker for the Canadian national team bound for the World Cup, has explained his decision to commit his international future to Canada rather than Nigeria.

In 2017, while playing international football for England’s Young Lions, the Chelsea academy product flirted with the Nigerian Federation.

Ugbo initiated the filing process for a one-time change of association from England to Nigeria in late 2020, as he had previously competed for the England U17 national team.

He declared publicly that he would represent the Super Eagles, citing participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup as one of his motivations.

In addition, Ugbo felt more connected to Nigeria than France and England due to the fact that the majority of his friends are Nigerian and the rest have African ancestry.

The Athletic UK reports that Ugbo hesitated with his decision because “he never heard from then-Nigeria national team coach Gernot Rohr throughout the process”.

The Troyes attacker added : “And I never grew up in Nigeria, either”.

Ugbo is one of seven players of Nigerian descent vying for a spot in the 2022 World Cup. The others are Bukayo Saka (England), Noah Okafor and Manuel Akanji (Switzerland), Jamal Musiala and Karim Adeyemi (Germany), and Sam Adekugbe (Canada) ,
