‘I loved it!’ – Rio Ferdinand reacts to Arsenal player Gabriel mocking Ivan Toney after Brentford win

Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand has supported Gabriel after he ridiculed Brentford forward Ivan Toney on social media.

On Sunday, the Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League standings with a 3-0 triumph at Brentford, their sixth victory in their last seven matches.

First-half goals from in-form William Saliba and £50 million summer signing Gabriel Jesus gave Arsenal the lead, and Fabio Vieira’s 25-yard strike in the second half capped an outstanding performance.

Last season’s similar match resulted in a demoralising 2-0 loss for Arsenal, so the weekend’s victory was a welcome redemption.

Toney took a subtle jab at Arsenal after last year’s match by tweeting “nice kick about with the boys,” which Gabriel referenced after Sunday’s routine win.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Do you know what? I loved Gabriel’s tweet. I loved that banter.

“Toney hammered them last season with his tweet, now it’s Arsenal’s turn. It was lovely, I love to see it.

“If I was playing, that’s what I’d be doing all the time. I would be smoking people on Twitter before the game. I’d take the fines, I would.”

Meanwhile, Toney claimed he had to stop himself from ‘nibbling’ back at Arsenal and described the social media messages as ‘a bit cringey.’

Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette used the formula to ridicule Brentford after Arsenal triumphed 2-1 at home last season.

“I think once was funny, second time a bit cringy but I bit my tongue, I wanted to reply, I wanted to nibble but fair play to them they played very well,” Toney told a press conference on Tuesday following his England call-up.

“They are a different Arsenal side to what we played before and they played very well, fair play to them, they are doing well.”

Arsenal returns to Premier League action after the international break against Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Brentford will play Bournemouth next.
