‘I like what Arsenal are doing’: Enrique reacts to rumoured deal as Chelsea set to miss out

Jose Enrique stated on Instagram, “I like what Arsenal are doing” in response to rumors that one of their main players, Gabriel Martinelli, will sign a new contract.

The 21-year-old has been instrumental in Mikel Arteta’s team sitting atop the Premier League table; thus, he was called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.

The player’s rise from the Brazilian lower leagues, where he was discovered by Edu Gaspar, to becoming one of the most entertaining forwards in the Premier League is remarkable.

In fact, there was considerable interest in the player, including from Barcelona and, perhaps more unexpectedly, London rivals Chelsea.

Martinelli’s current contract is slated to expire in 2024, but according to the Spanish outlet and Catalan-based paper SPORT, he will renew until 2027.

Enrique, a former Liverpool defender, admired the work the Gunners are doing and how they are retaining their finest players upon hearing the news.

“I like what Arsenal are doing in the transfer market,” said Enrique. “Renewing their best players’ contract etc… Well done Arsenal.”

Martinelli served as Tite’s backup during Brazil’s early exit from the World Cup in Qatar, where Brazil was eliminated in the group stage.

Martinelli would have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge from the experience, but unlike Gabriel Jesus, he returns to the Emirates in good health.

Mikel Arteta must make important decisions in light of Jesus’ likely long-term absence, including whether or not Martinelli will play in the middle.

It appears like Eddie Nketiah will assume this function prior to Martinelli’s position move, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Arteta tried it at some point.
