‘I don’t mean that disrespectfully,’ Paul Merson sends warning to Chelsea fans over Graham Potter

Chelsea fans should “not get carried away” with Graham Potter’s start at Stamford Bridge, according to Arsenal legend Paul Merson.

Chelsea appointed former Brighton manager Potter as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement last month, but due to the international break and postponements following the Queen’s death, the 47-year-old has only overseen three games.

Potter’s first game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw with Red Bull Salzburg, and the Blues have since beaten Crystal Palace away and thrashed AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League.

Merson was not blown away by their performances against Palace and Milan and believes Chelsea fans’shouldn’t get carried away’ because Potter’s side has yet to play ‘anyone of real note.’

Chelsea, who are currently fifth in the Premier League, host Wolves on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

Merson told the Daily Star: “I watched Chelsea at Crystal Palace last weekend and I thought the Blues got away with one.

“The goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was the man of the match and it could have gone either way.

“If you came to watch the two sides for the first time, you wouldn’t have known who was Chelsea. There was that little between them.

“AC Milan was a good result but they were fortunate to put a team out, so we shouldn’t get carried away just yet with Graham Potter.

“There’s no doubt that he’s had a decent enough start but they haven’t played anyone of real note.

“If Chelsea get in the top four this season, I think they’ve had the biggest result ever. I don’t mean that disrespectfully but it’s going to take time to implement his ideas from Brighton.

“Next season I think we will see a completely different Chelsea. They will be a massive threat.”

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is currently out with a knee injury suffered against AC Milan, but Marc Cucurella could return to action after recovering from illness.
