“I definitely want to move” – Phil Foden admits desire to make a positional switch at Manchester City

Phil Foden has expressed his desire to change positions for Manchester City in the upcoming seasons. He has performed exceptionally well for Manchester City in recent years by adapting to playing in the wide positions under Pep Guardiola, mainly on the left side of the attacking trio.

As he progressed through Manchester City’s Academy, Phil Foden played more frequently in midfield. However, due to the competition for places in the central areas of the pitch at the Etihad, he had to adjust to playing in other positions to get more playing time.

Even though Phil Foden had an outstanding performance during the weekend’s game, scoring a fantastic goal by dribbling past five defenders after cutting in from the right side, he still has his sights set on playing in the central midfield position for Manchester City in the future.

After the 2-0 victory against Newcastle United on Saturday, Foden spoke about his desire to play in midfield.

“It’s something I definitely want to move into over the next few years.

“I’ve always seen myself playing there. Hopefully, I can adapt and become a midfielder — that’s my aim.

Foden continued, “I feel like I could possibly get a chance there. I love to score goals and the manager sees that and prefers me wide. I enjoy playing anywhere.”

Manchester City is expected to make significant changes to their first-team squad during the summer, which could potentially open up more opportunities for Phil Foden to play in the midfield position next season. This is particularly likely given the uncertain futures of key players such as Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kalvin Phillips.

If Pep Guardiola and his coaching team believe that Phil Foden is ready to take on the responsibilities of a central midfielder, Manchester City may focus on recruiting new players for the wide attacking positions instead.

During a recent press conference, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola suggested that he may use Phil Foden in the midfield position when his team needs more players who can make forward runs.

He explained, “When I want runners in attacking midfield, I’d put Phil (Foden), (Ilkay) Gundo. They’re better than Kevin (De Bruyne) when it’s more close to the box. When I want more control, I’d play Bernardo (Silva), I’d play another type of player.”
