‘I can tell you’, Phil Foden could be axed from World Cup after Man City latest – Expert
Noel Whelan has speculated that England manager Gareth Southgate may not select Phil Foden for this month’s World Cup despite his great performance for Manchester City.
In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the former Leeds striker stated that he “can only see Raheem Sterling starting in Qatar.”
Foden and Jack Grealish, teammates at Manchester City, are alternatives for Southgate on the left wing after being named to the 26-man squad on 10 November.
This season at the Etihad Stadium, Foden has been in the best form of his career, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.
Since completing his summer transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea, Sterling has scored only five goals.
Whelan told Ewan Kingsbury of Football Insider when asked who is likely to feature on the left side of England’s attack: “I can tell you that Southgate will go to his tried and trusted.
“Raheem Sterling has been the one he has gone to in the past. He’s the one who has the most experience in that front three.
“It would be hard to look past Sterling as the first choice on that left-hand side.
“But Gareth could see something completely different. That’s why you have a squad of 26.
“He’s got good squad depth and quality, and it’s going to be all about who can hit the ground running in a pretty unusual tournament.
“But for the first game against Iran, I can only see Sterling starting.”
