How many points Chelsea need to guarantee a Champions League qualification spot after slipping into the top four battle
Thomas Tuchel and his Chelsea team are nearing the end of their season, but they aren’t going out with a bang.
The Blues are sputtering at the end of the season, with only two wins in their previous five games.
The most recent harrowing experience was a 1-0 loss against former manager Frank Lampard and his Everton team, who had little of the ball but managed to frustrate Tuchel’s troops.
The goal was also the result of a mistake on their part, as Cesar Azpilicueta gave the ball away to Richarlison, who finished neatly.
Concerning the game afterwards, the manager claimed he was disappointed by his side: “Very disappointed. We knew what was coming, and like in the last matches, we struggled to have clean sheets. In the last four matches, we have one clean sheet against West Ham, and it is the only win we have. So very disappointed.”
Following their setback, London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham both won to reduce the gap on Chelsea.
The Blues remain third, but they are only three points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal and five points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
One thing working in Tuchel’s favor is that both teams must play each other before the end of the season. This indicates that one of the two teams, if not both, must lose points.
In each scenario, if both teams earned maximum points in their games but Arsenal won the derby, Arsenal would finish ahead with 75 points while Spurs would finish behind with 70. That means the Blues would need to bag five points in their next four games to guarantee a top-four finish.
In scenario two, if Tottenham wins the derby but both clubs get maximum points, Antonio Conte would finish first with 73 points, while Arsenal would finish second with 69. This means that four points would be sufficient to keep Chelsea in the top four.
That means they would need to collect six points in their next four games to finish in the top four.
If they can achieve that in their next two games, they will be able to not only breathe easier, but also rotate ahead of the FA Cup final against Liverpool later this month.
