How Granit Xhaka has reacted to the breakdown of Roma transfer as he is set to sign a new four-year deal.
Arsenal are confident that Granit Xhaka will renew his dedication to the club following the breakdown of his transfer to Roma.
The 28-year-old joined the Gunners five years ago and has been a pillar of Arsenal’s midfield under three consecutive managers notwithstanding, at times, being something of a divisive figure.
After their failure to qualify for Europe, Xhaka had been keen to seek a new challenge and had been targeted by Roma and their current manager Jose Mourinho.
Xhaka had been fascinated by the possibility of playing for the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, but the Serie A club failed to get close to meeting Arsenal’s £20million valution.
Roma are now thought to have switched their focus to Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Delaney, while Arsenal have now joined into negotiations with Xhaka over a new contract.

According to the Evening Standard, rather than sulk and rue a missed chance, Xhaka is said to have struck in training since his return to north London last week following his exploits with Switzerland at Euro 2020.
The midfielder’s relationship with Mikel Arteta is said to remain firm and Xhaka featured prominently in Sunday’s pre-season loss against Chelsea, scoring his side’s only goal in a 2-1 loss.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Xhaka will sign a new deal at Arsenal until 2025.
The news comes just a day after reports alleged the Gunners were offering the 28-year-old a fresh deal.
Xhaka’s existing deal is set to expire in two years’ time and he currently collects a reported £100,000-a-week.
The Gunners are said to have weighed up the cost of replacing the player against the on and off-field qualities he brings to the team.
Xhaka hasn’t always shown his best at the Emirates, featuring 220 times in all games, but impressed for Switzerland at Euro 2020 this summer.
Manager Mikel Arteta verified Xhaka would be part of his squad for the new term after their pre-season defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.
The Spanish coach said: “Granit is going to stay with us. He is a key member of our squad and a player that we rate and value so much.
“He only trained for two days but still wanted to play in this game and I think that is a very clear commitment from him that he wants to be here.”
Xhaka is expected to start Arsenal’s opening match of the new campaign against Brentford a week on Friday, especially in light of Thomas Partey’s ankle injury.
The Ghana international is sweating on the results of scans after he was pushed off following a challenge by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but he is almost unquestionably out of the trip to the Brentford Community Stadium.
