‘He will not be happy’ – Pep Guardiola tipped to drop Man City star indefinitely

Sergio Gomez has yet to start a Premier League game for Manchester City since signing from RSC Anderlecht in the summer, but Vital Man City believed he’d receive more chances as the season progressed because Pep Guardiola doesn’t have another left-back.

Frank McAvennie, on the other hand, believes the 22-year-old’s  chances of playing under Pep Guardiola have been damaged after being sent off in their last Champions League group game.

Gomez was sent off in City’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen and came off the bench in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool.

He told Football Insider: “Pep will not be happy with the red card. It was his chance to go and shine and he did not do it. He will not be happy. We might not see him again to be honest. I think that is how ruthless Pep is, you just might not see him again. I will watch that with interest.”

Gomez has played 316 minutes for City this season in eight appearances across all competitions.

Guardiola has favored Joao Cancelo as a temporary left-back, but Kyle Walker’s injury may force the 28-year-old to shift to right-back, offering up a position for Gomez to compete for.

Guardiola brought in the Spaniard to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko, who joined Arsenal this summer, but he did not bring in a more senior replacement for the suspended Benjamin Mendy.

As a result, City only have one designated left-back and an abundance of centre-backs who can play both positions.

McAvennie’s prediction that Gomez will struggle to play again may be a little far-fetched, given his performances before the red card were encouraging. Guardiola does not keep grudges as long as the player maintains the proper mentality.

It’s far too early in Gomez’s career to write him off, especially when all of his playing time in Europe was proof of Guardiola’s faith in him. He was disappointing against Copenhagen, but Gomez is capable of recovering.
