‘He (Sir Alex) said to me’ Cristiano Ronaldo shares what his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson told him about joining Manchester City
Cristiano Ronaldo disclosed that Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to discourage him from joining Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team.
The Portuguese superstar was rumored to have signed with Manchester United’s arch rivals last summer, but he finally chose to return to Old Trafford.
Before Ferguson appealed to Ronaldo to return to the club that signed him as a teenager from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, Ronaldo was on the verge of joining Manchester’s blue side.
Ronaldo has already discussed his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, describing him as a father figure.
Ronaldo explained in a TalkTV interview with Piers Morgan how Ferguson influenced his decision.
“I followed my heart.” The former Real Madrid star explained.
“He (Sir Alex) said to me, ‘It’s impossible for you to go to Manchester City’, and I said, ‘OK, Boss.'”
The 37-year-old further said that he felt betrayed by the club and that he believes Erik ten Hag and other United executives want him to leave.
Manchester United had a rough season last year, finishing sixth in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and subsequently Ralf Rangnick, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s comeback was a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was the club’s leading scorer in all competitions, including 18 Premier League goals.
